From Houston to Galveston, Marfa to Austin, Texas is famous for its wide-open spaces, delicious TexMex cuisine, and lovely fields of bluebonnets. Visitors and residents alike enjoy events like South by Southwest, Dallas Cowboys games, and the state’s famous rodeos. With so many people moving to Texas, it won’t be surprising if the next person you want to hire lives in The Lone Star State. Chances are, if your next employee is a Texan, they won’t want to leave. Fortunately, in this era of remote work, collaborating across state lines is easy.Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. Register your business in Texas in two easy steps:
You should receive your tax account number immediately after applying. Texas has no income tax, so you don’t need to register for withholding taxes.Once you’ve been assigned your tax account number, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes online. Remember, in general, you are responsible for paying an unemployment tax once you’ve paid $1500 in wages in a single calendar quarter, or employed someone for a portion of a day in 20 different weeks in a calendar year.If you need additional support, the Texas Workforce Commission has a useful FAQ page.Note: For more information on the tax implications of hiring a Texas-based employee while you're headquartered elsewhere, please read our post on remote work taxes.Interested in streamlining your state registration process?
