From Nashville to Memphis, Knoxville to Chattanooga, Tennessee is famous for its bucolic rolling hills, rollicking country music, and best-in-class whiskey. Residents of The Volunteer State enjoy low taxes, a thriving job market, and proximity to some of the best universities in the country. Chances are, if your next employee is a Tennessean, they won’t want to leave. Fortunately, in this era of remote work, collaborating across state lines is easy.
Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your company with the state of Tennessee.
Register your business in Tennessee in one easy step:
- Register with the Department of Labor and Workforce Development by filling out the appropriate form for your business and faxing or mailing it back.
It will take at least 10 days for your application to be processed. Once your application is processed, you’ll receive your Employer Number in the mail. After you receive your Employer Number, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes online. Remember, in general, you are responsible for paying an unemployment tax once you’ve paid $1500 in wages in a single calendar quarter, or employed someone for a portion of a day in 20 different weeks in a calendar year. You do not need to register for withholding taxes because Tennessee has no state income tax.
If you need additional support, the Department of Labor and Workforce Development has a useful employer handbook.
