Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the union, but it is also one of the most vibrant and beautiful. From Newport to Providence, Rhode Island is famous for its stunning coastline, world-class universities, and rich history. Not only that but visitors and residents alike enjoy year-round delicious seafood. So, chances are, if your next employee calls The Ocean State home, they won’t want to leave. Fortunately, in this era of remote work, collaborating across state lines is easy.

Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your company with the state of Rhode Island.

Register your business in Rhode Island in one easy step:

  1. You can register for both your income tax withholding account and your unemployment insurance account online through the Rhode Island Division of Taxation.

You should receive your withholding Account ID immediately after you register. You’ll receive your RI Employer Account Number within three days of registering online. Once you’ve received both your account numbers, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes online. In Rhode Island, unlike other states, there isn’t a minimum threshold of wages paid before you become liable for unemployment insurance taxes. Rather, nearly all employers of one or more people are liable for unemployment taxes.

If you need additional help, the Division of Taxation has a portal user guide. The Division of Taxation also has a useful FAQ section that covers employment taxes.
