From Missoula to Bozeman, Whitefish to Helena, Montana is a state of dramatic natural beauty. Every year, millions of visitors flock to Big Sky Country to visit Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. Residents and visitors alike enjoy year-round outdoor recreation from skiing to rafting, hunting to hiking. Chances are, if your next employee is a Montanan, they’re not going to want to leave. Fortunately, in this era of remote work, collaborating across state lines is easy.

Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your company with the state of Montana.

Register your business in Montana in two easy steps:

  1. First, you’ll need to register with the Department of Revenue via Montana’s new TransAction Portal. You can complete the registration application online.
  2. Next, you’ll need to register with the Montana Department of Labor and Industry. You can complete the registration application online through the UI eServices for Employers website.

You should receive your account number from the Department of Revenue in the mail about two weeks after registering. You’ll receive your account number from the Department of Labor and Industry about a week after registering.

Once you’ve received your account numbers, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes online. Remember, in general, you are responsible for paying an unemployment tax once you’ve paid $1500 in wages in a single calendar quarter, or employed someone for a portion of a day in each of 20 different weeks in a calendar year.

If you need additional help, the Department of Labor and Industry has a number of handbooks, guides, and FAQ pages.
