From Kansas City to St. Louis, Missouri is worth a visit for the barbecue alone. Then, of course, there are the beautiful Ozarks, and a wide variety of historical sites and abundant lakes and rivers. The lucky Missourians who call The Show-Me State home enjoy affordable housing and four distinct but temperate seasons. Chances are, if your next employee calls Missouri home, they won’t want to leave. Fortunately, in this era of remote work, it’s easy to collaborate across state lines.

Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your company with the state of Missouri.

Register your business in Missouri in one easy step:

  1. In Missouri, you can register for both the withholding tax and the unemployment tax through the Department of Revenue’s online registration process.

You’ll receive your account numbers around two weeks after you register. Once you’ve received your account numbers, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes online. Remember, in general, you are responsible for paying an unemployment tax once you’ve paid $1500 in wages in a single calendar quarter, or employed someone for a portion of a day in each of 20 different weeks in a calendar year.If you need additional help, the Department of Revenue has a useful FAQ section.

If you have employees in Kansas City or St. Louis, you may be responsible for additional city taxes. You can register with the City of Kansas City - Revenue Division online. For St. Louis, you’ll need to fill out an E-9 form and fax it to the Collector of Revenue.
