So, if your next employee is a Mainer, chances are they won’t want to leave. Fortunately, no matter where your business is based, collaborating across state lines is easy in this era of remote work.
Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your company with the state of Maine.
Register your business in Maine in two easy steps:
- First, you’ll need to register with Maine Revenue Services. Once you’ve begun the application, you’ll have 45 minutes to complete it. The application does not save. You can check on the status of your application by calling the Central Registration Unit at (207) 624-5644 a few days after you submit your application.
- Next, you’ll need to register with ReEmployME to receive your Employer Account Number.
You’ll receive your Withholding Account Number in the mail within 20 days. You’ll receive your Employer Account Number in 5-7 days.
Once you’ve been assigned your Withholding Account Number and your Employer Account Number, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes. Remember, you are responsible for paying an unemployment tax once you’ve paid $1500 in wages in a single calendar quarter, or employed someone for a portion of a day in 20 weeks in a calendar year.
