Chances are if your next employee is an Iowan, they won’t want to leave. Fortunately, no matter where your business is based, collaborating across state lines is easy in this era of remote work.
Bringing on a new employee can be exciting, but there’s often a lot to do as well. You want to onboard your new hire as quickly and smoothly as possible to ensure their success at your organization. But before you get started with onboarding, you’ll need to register your company with the state of Iowa.
Register your business in Iowa in two easy steps:
- First, you’ll need to register online with the Iowa Department of Revenue to receive your Withholding Permit Number.
- Next, you’ll need to create an account with MyIowaUI and register to receive your UI tax account number. Iowa Workforce Development asks that you do not register for your UI tax account number until after you have already employed workers in Iowa and paid wages.
It should take 4-6 weeks to receive your Withholding Permit Number. You should receive your UI tax account number immediately after registering.
Once you have both account numbers, you’ll be able to register new employees, file wage reports, and submit unemployment taxes. You are required to file wage reports quarterly with Iowa Workforce Development. The Department of Revenue has a useful FAQ section that will help you understand how frequently you need to file with them.
